Vipers Coach Unfazed by Tough CAF Champions League Group Opponents

Roberto Oliviera, the head coach of Vipers SC is unfazed by the tough opponents his team landed in their group games in the forthcoming CAF Champions League.

The Ugandan Premier League Champions Vipers were pitted alongside Moroccan Giants Raja Casablanca, Guinea’s Horoya AC, and Simba SC of Tanzania during the draws at the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt held on Monday.

Despite this, Vipers SC head coach, Oliviera, says his team has the potential to penetrate through the group. He says that while he acknowledges the high status of his opponents, they should equally worry about his side, which produced a remarkable performance and eliminated DRC’s TP Mazembe during the qualifiers.

The venoms will have to replicate their performance in the preliminary rounds where they eliminated Olympic Real De Bangui from the Central African Republic in the preliminary round, and TP Mazembe in the second round. This is the Vipers’ first-ever appearance in the lucrative group stages and the only second Ugandan team after KCCA FC, which qualified in 2018.

The group matches will begin on February 10th, 2023, and end on April 1st, 2023. Teams will compete on a home-and-away basis. Vipers will play their debut game between February 10th-11th. The team boasts the depth of its squad after signing a couple of experienced players before the preliminary rounds and qualifying for the group stages to join their vast squad ahead of the group stages encounters.

These include Ashraf Mandela, Lumala Abdu, Marvin Youngman, and Murshid Juuko, who was brought in to cover Halid Lwaliwa’s defensive void. The venoms also have seven international players on their roster, five of whom are DRC nationals.

They are Gracia Mbombo, Darcy Mbaka, Rodriguez Shamamba, Alfred Mudekereza, and Olivier Osomba. The same team has Abubakar Lawal of Nigeria and Fabian Mutombora of Burundi as part of its squad. Meanwhile, at least USD 550,000 is already available for every team that qualified for the group stage of the CAF Champions League.
