Uganda’s Chemutai wins gold in ongoing Tokyo Olympics
Peruth Chemutai has earned Uganda her first gold medal in the ongoing Olympics games after winning the women’s 3000m steeplechase final today, August 4, 2021.
The 22-year-old Ugandan timed 9min 01.45sec at the Olympic Stadium, outsprinting American Courtney Frerichs with 250 metres to win today’s finals.
Following Chemutai’s win, President Museveni has taken to his twitter platform to congratulate the athlete before revealing how proud the country is following this milestone.
“I congratulate Peruth Chemutai upon winning gold in the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the Olympic Games in Tokyo and becoming the first Ugandan woman to do so. The country is extremely proud of you. Kongoi!” Museveni tweeted on Wednesday.

Frerichs claimed silver in 9:04.79 while Kenya’s Hyvin Kiyeng took bronze in 9:05.39 minutes.
It should be recalled that another Ugandan, Winnie Nanyondo qualified for 1500m women’s finals in the Olympics when she finished in the fourth position.
