Magengo, Chesang Triumph at UAF National Cross Country Championships

Uganda Police Forces-UPF Long-distance runner Martin Kiprotich Magengo won the National cross-country championships held in Tororo Saturday. The 22-year-old athlete, who secured the second position during the recent eastern cross country championships, safeguarded the 10km race victory in 29:29.08.

Isaac Kibet from the Uganda Prison Services followed in the second position as he crossed the finishing line at 29:42.24 followed by Samuel Kibet from Arua Association at 29:49.06. Magengo says his victory has given him the opportunity to represent Uganda at the World cross country championships.

“It’s my first time to be in the national team for the world cross country championships, which is an opportunity for me to explore my career to the next level,” Magengo told Uganda Radio Network in Tororo. He explained that the race was challenging because of the obstacles introduced on the route and the sunshine.

Stella Chesang won the senior women’s category after crossing the finishing line at 33:56.6 to defeat Prisca Chesang who came second with 34:05.9. Annet Chelangat from the Uganda Wildlife Authority club finished in the third position at 34:13.4.

Chesang, who recently returned from maternity leave, said the course was friendly and a bit technical. She explains that making it to the National team is another step to preparing for the World Cross Country Championships, which are slated for February 18th, 2023 in Australia.

In the 2km mixed relay, Uganda’s middle-distance runner, Ronald Musagala, completed at 5:36.1 to secure victory in the men’s category while Aciru Knight won the women’s category in 6:23.09. Musagala, says he expects an outstanding performance for the team that has qualified for the mixed relay because it seems to be strong.

Benjamin Njia, the Uganda Athletics Federation Vice president of technical, says the selected team, which is to be officially announced on Tuesday, December 13 by UAF, is expected to report to the National Training Camp in Kapchorwa before December 25th, 2022 in preparations for the World Cross country championships early next year.
