Jackson Mayanja Appointed Hippos Coach

Jackson  Mayanja has been appointed the new Under-20 National Team-hippos Head Coach ahead of AFCON qualifiers.

His appointment was confirmed by FUFA Communications Director Ahmed Hussein, “FUFA has appointed Jackson Mayanja as interim Head coach of the Uganda U20 National team. He will be assisted by Simeon Masaba and Noah Kasule Babadi”, he said.

Mayanja, known in football circles as “Mia Mia” takes over from KCCA FC tactician Morley Byekwaso due to club commitments.

He joins a team that has already spent the last six days in a residential camp at the Cranes Paradise hotel training for the African Cup of Nations -AFCON U20 Zonal Qualifiers, which are set to take place in Sudan from October 28th to November 11th, 2022.

Mayanja will handle a side comprised of players from the golden era, who reached the AFCON U20 Final in Mauritania in 2021, as well as other players from the national Under-17 team, including Ibrahim Juma, Issa Bugembe, Shamuran Kamya, and Oscar Mawa.

On Tuesday, the team held a build-up match with Uganda Premier League outfits KCCA FC at MTN Omondi stadium in Lugogo which ended in a 2-1 win in favor of the Hippos.

Speaking after the match, Mayanja said he was thrilled with the players’ performance and believes they will readily adopt his philosophy as they seek to defend their regional crown.

Uganda Hippos are the tournament’s reigning champions, having defeated Tanzania in December 2020, to earn a spot at the ultimate tournament -AFCON in 2021 in Mauritania, where they went ahead to advance to the final before losing to Ghana.

They will return to the tournament, which features seven participants, all from the Council for East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA), in order to be one of the two finalists who will qualify for the AFCON U20 Championship in 2023.
