Gulu Runners Optimistic Ahead of KIX Senshu International Marathon in Japan

Two marathon runners from Gulu City are optimistic they will put up a good show in the 2023 KIX Senshu International Marathon in Izumisano city in Japan.

The duo will be among the over 2000 runners expected to feature in the 41.195 Km Marathon slated for February 12 in the southern part of Osaka Prefecture.

Walter Oyoo 26, a student of Gulu University, and Agnes Oroma, 35 earned their qualification for the race after putting up a good show in October last year during a 34-kilometer run held in Gulu City.

Oyoo finished first among the men clocking a personal best time of 2hrs:04 mins, while Oroma emerged winner among female category clocking 3hrs: 40 mins.

With less than two weeks left for the Marathon in Japan, Oyoo told Uganda Radio Network in an interview on Monday that he is ready to prove a point and shine on  first International race.

Oyoo notes that he has been training hard in the hilly areas of Kapchorwa district to better his physique and speed ahead of the race. He made it clear that he will run better time than that he set in Gulu last year.

Oroma also says she has trained well and will post a good result. She says her past experience as a marathoner combined with the good training she received will enable to her shine in Japan.

Gulu City Woman Member of Parliament, Betty Aol Ocan who facilitated the athletes’ training says the duo’s participation in the Marathon is a blessing for the region which doesn’t feature often in international sports.

She notes that the athletes were invited to participate in the competition by officials of from Izumisano City.

The athletes are due to travel to Japan on February 8.  Two other Ugandan athletes  sponsored by the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) will feature in the KIX Senshu International Marathon.
