Busiro Wins First ever Masaza Cup

Busiro county has emerged as the champions of the Buganda Masaza Cup after defeating Buddu 2-1 in the final of the tournament played at Mutesa II stadium in Wankulukuku.

Masuudi Kafumbe’s timely substitution and subsequent goal towards the end of the game were pivotal in securing a victor after the match remained tied at 1-1 for the most of the second half.

But there was anxiety as several people who had gathered in thousands at the stadium to catch a glimpse of the Kabaka who was expected to grace the tournament as is the norm, waited for him until kickoff, but he never turned up. In the end, it was the Katikiro, Charles Peter Mayiga to presided over the closure of the tournament.

Speaking to journalists after the game, Katikiro Mayiga said that Kabaka was unable to attend the final because he is outside the country for undisclosed reasons.

In action, both teams employed a deep playing style, resulting in limited opportunities to score a goal. Towards the 40th minute, Busiro managed to score the first goal through Isaac Ofoyrworth, who tapped in Jimmy Kalema’s cross.

But their lead was short-lived as Buddu’s Denis Kalanzi scored an equalizer a few minutes later, in a goal that was hotly contested by Busiro’s officials, but was upheld and marked the end of the first half.

Tension arose as the teams headed to the dressing rooms for the halftime break when Busiro’s goalkeeper and other officials attacked the linesman. They disputed his decision to allow Buddu’s goal, arguing that it was offside.

The situation escalated and it took the intervention of stadium security personnel to secure the linesman and the referee from the fired-up Busiro team. Masuudi Kafumbe scored the winning goal toward the end of the game.

This was the first time Busiro is winning the annual Masaza tournament and consequently has pocketed 12 million shillings while Buddu got 9 million for finishing second.

Speaking to URN after the game, goal scorer Kafumbe said it was a prestigious moment for him to score the winning goal.
