UPDF confirms MP Ssewanyana re-arrest

Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has confirmed the re-arrest of Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana saying he has more pending charges to answer to.

According to the UPDF spokesperson Brig. Flavia Byekwaso, Ssewanyana is currently being detained in Kireka, adding that there is no need for alarm.

“There are other charges that he needs to answer and its not true that he has been kidnapped,” Brig. Byekwaso said.

His lawyers led by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago said that Ssewanyana was re-arrested at the entrance of Kigo Prison after he was released on bail last evening.

Joel Ssenyonyi, the NUP spokesperson condemned Ssewanyana’s re-arrest saying the state has mastered the art of violating court orders.

A viral video shows Ssewanyana being arrested while walking outside the gates of Kigo government prison.

Meanwhile,  his Co-accused and Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya is still in Kigo Prison after his release papers were not signed by the International Crimes Division Court.

According to Lawyer and Kampala Woman MP Shamim Malende, one of Ssegirinya’s sureties has to be substituted.

The legislators were granted a 40 million cash bail by the Masaka High Court Judge Victoria Nakintu on 21st September but up to date, they have not been released.

Justice Victoria Nakintu granted the two MPs temporary freedom on grounds that bail was their constitutional right and had substantial sureties including Hon. Ibrahim Ssemuju, MP for Kira Municipality, Hon. Boniface Mutabazi MP for Kalungu East, and Bukomasimbi woman MP Nanyondo Veronica.
