An unknown gunman has shot dead a local businessman and injured another in Kalongo Town Council in Agago district. The deceased has been identified as Joseph Komakech 56, who has been operating a shop along Market Square Street while the injured who is nursing serious injuries is Joel Opio 26.
According to eyewitnesses, the assailant who had concealed his face with a mask and a hooded attire stormed the deceased shop at around 8:00 pm on Wednesday evening and placed the occupants at gunpoint while demanding money. The assailant shot Komakech six times in the chest and shoulder a few minutes later.
He also shot Opio four times in the back and the hip before fleeing the scene with an unspecified amount of money. The victims were rushed to Dr. Joseph Ambrossoli Hospital, Kalongo where Komakech was pronounced dead.
The Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson, David Ongom Mudong confirms the incident saying police have opened a case of murder by shooting and aggravated robbery vide SD REF: 17/23/11/2022. Mudong regrets the incident saying a hunt is on for the assailant to face the law.
The incident follows a wave of similar armed attacks targeting mobile money operators and businessmen in Agago district. In August 2022, two unknown gunmen attacked a shopkeeper and mobile money operator in Otumpili trading center and robbed him of Shillings 1.8 million. Two weeks later, an unidentified gunman stormed Oporot village in Patongo town council where they robbed a produce dealer of Shillings 1.2 million.
