UEGCL to takeover operations of Namanve Thermo Power Plant

Earlier today, Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, the Minister of Energy visited the Namanve Thermal Power Plant in a move that will see Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) takeover its operations and maintenance on behalf of Government from Jacobsen Elektro from Norway. The plant is a 50MW heavy fuel oil thermal plant located in Namanve.

On 13th April 2007, the Government of Uganda and Jacobsen Elektro entered into a Build, Own, Operate & Transfer (BOOT) implementation agreement for a term of 13 years which will soon expire. The plant has 7 engines of Wärtsilä W18V32 engine type each installed with a 7.285MW generator.

“As we think through the takeover of the plant, we will work with UEGCL to ensure we absorb the existing staff at Namanve Power Plant once the transfer arrangements are concluded.” Eng. Pauline Irene Batebe – Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development said.

“UEGCL has a mandate to own electricity generation assets on behalf of Government of Uganda and we have adequate capacity to operate this plant. Our staff will work with the Jacobsen staff to ensure a seamless transfer process.” Dr. Eng. Harrison E. Mutikanga – CEO, UEGCL said.
