Suspected Catholic priest killer remanded

The magistrate court in Mpigi has remanded a 35-year-old man suspected of murdering a Catholic priest in Gomba district.

Vincent Katumba was on Wednesday charged and remanded to Kitalya Prisons by Grade one Magistrate, Maureen Mukoya.

The prosecution alleges that on August 18, 2021, Katumba stabbed Fr. Josephat Kasambula, 71, to death as he attempted to evict him from his house and land in Kikunyu village, Gomba district.

The deceased, who was a priest at St. Charles Lwanga Catholic parish, Lwamata, Kiboga district had gone to inspect his farm where he met his death.

The suspect was charged with murder under section 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Act. The magistrate did not allow Katumba to take a plea since the court has no jurisdiction to hear the case against him.

Ms Mukoya remanded the suspect until September 14, 2021 when he will return to court for further mention of his case.
