Six Confirmed Dead as Two Buses Collide Head – on in Ntungamo

Six people have been confirmed dead and scores injured after two buses were involved in a head-on collision near Rwahi town situated along the Rukiga – Mbarara highway in Ntugamo district.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred at around 04.00 AM when the driver of the Rwanda’s – Volcano Bus Reg. No. RAD 798B destined for Kigali-Rwanda from Kampala changed lanes and crashed into a Kenya’s Oxygen bus Reg. No. KCU 054L destined for Nairobi from Kigali. The two drivers of the buses were among the dead.

The Kigezi regional police commander SSP Ibrahim Saiga said that the critically injured were taken to Kabale regional referral hospital while others were taken to different health units in Rukiga and Ntungamo districts.

“Our officers are still compiling the details of both the dead and the injured. Among the dead are both the drivers of the ill-fated vehicles. We shall share details with you later,” he said. There is fear that the death toll may rise.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate explained that preliminary investigations indicate that the cause of the accident was attributed to too much fog and the drivers couldn’t easily see what was ahead of them.
