The Police has tightened the security at the home of Assistant Inspector General of Police- AIGP Grace Akullo after thugs gained entry into the leaving room last weekend and varnished with a flat TV screen.
At the time when AIGP Akullo’s home was attacked by thugs, it was being guarded by two police officers from the general duty department. The two have since been arrested and are waiting to be charged in the force’s disciplinary court.
In response, sources have intimated that security has been tightened with an increase in the number of guards picked from the elite unit commonly known as the Very Important Police Protection Unit -VIPPU.
“I want to tell you that what happened at madam’s home was an eye-opener. We were directed to increase the police guards’ numbers at her home and this time we have not deployed general duty but VIPPU. We believe these new officers will deal with any thug who may attempt to raid the home again,” a source said.
AIGP Akullo was the director of Criminal Investigations for more than 11 years until this year in February when President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni replaced her with Maj Tom Magambo. She was posted to the directorate of Interpol which is based at Mabua road in Kololo.
But thugs did not fear the home of a person attaining the highest rank in the police force as they scaled over the perimeter wall, broke the kitchen window, stepped on the sink, and dropped inside.
All this was reportedly carried out when AIGP Akullo was awake attending to prayer. Akullo’s husband and daughter were also awake. The thugs did not fear the lights that were on in the various bedrooms.
Police guards were arrested when the force’s alert squad commander Senior Superintendent of Police -SSP Ashraf Chemonges, Kampala metropolitan CID commander SSP Bob Kagarura, and Kira DPC SP Abbas Senyonjo visited the director’s home.
The senior police officers decided to arrest the police guards after they confessed that they were asleep when the incident happened.
Even though the raid on AIGP Akullo’s home happened over six days ago, no senior police officer including the spokesperson Senior Commissioner of Police -SCP Fred Enanga, has come out to officially to speak about the incident. SSP Chemonges referred URN to SSP Kagarura who has also not commented about the incident.
