MP Muhammad Ssegirinya granted bail

Kawempe North Member of Parliament (MP), Muhammad Ssegirinya has finally been granted bail this morning by the International Criminal Division Court.

Ssegirinya was jointly arrested and charged with Makindye West MP, Allan Ssewanyana on September 8 on charges of murder, attempted murder, and terrorism in connection with the machete murders in the greater Masaka region.

The two legislators were granted a cash bail of Shs20 million each last week, however, Hon. Ssegirinya couldn’t be released from Kigo Prison because one of his Sureties, Hon Francis Zaake who had committed to stand on his behalf failed to turn up because he is out of the country.

Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago who is also Ssegirinya’s lawyer was forced to substitute Zaake with Ntejeru South MP, Patrick Nsaja.

This morning, the International Criminal Division Court Justice, Susan Okalany satisfied with Ssegirinya’s new surety ordered for the release of the legislator from Kigo Prison.

However, Ssegirinya’s jail release could be short-lived amid fears that he may also be re-arrested as his counterpart, Ssewanyana who was forcefully recaptured at the gates of Kigo prison shortly after his release.

Following his re-arrest, the UPDF came out the next day and revealed that Hon. Ssewanyana was facing fresh charges unrelated to the Masaka murders.
