MP Muhammad Ssegirinya granted bail
Buganda Road Court’s Grade One Magistrate Doreen Karungi has finally granted bail to Kawempe North Member of Parliament (MP), Muhammad Ssegirinya.
Karungi granted the legislator bail on grounds that he needs urgent specialised treatment.
In the last court session, Ssegirinya requested court to grant him permission to receive specialised treatment explaining that the one he had received from Murchison Bay Hospital, Luzira and Mulago National Referral Hospital was not effective.
He was granted a cash bail of Shs1 million and his sureties Shs10 million non-cash. The legislator’s lawyer and Kampala Woman Member of Parliament, Shamim Malende shared the news on her social media accounts and vowed to continue pursuing justice for her client.
“Thank you God, Hon Ssegirinya Muhammad has been granted bail by Her Worship Doreen Karungi at Buganda Road Court on charges of inciting violence. As his lawyers, we are pushing for his complete freedom by pursuing a review/appeal in other files in Masaka Highcourt where bail was denied.” Malende posted.
Ssegirinya is facing charges of intent to incite violence via his Facebook page among the masses in 2020.
According to the prosecution, he was quoted saying, “ I am warning those who are trying to assassinate Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu that what will happen will be fourth times worse than the 1994 Rwandan genocide.”
Ssegirinya and Makindye West MP, Allan Ssewanyana are also facing murder charges, terrorism and attempted murder in connection with the recent Masaka machete killings where 26 people lost their lives. The court is set to start hearing the matter on December 22, 2021.
