Minister Jeje Odongo, UN Special Envoy meet over security in Great Lakes Region

Hon. Gen. Abubaker Jeje Odongo, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uganda met and held discussions with His Excellency Huang XIA the United Nations Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region on Wednesday 8th September 2021 at the Ministry Headquarters.

After the exchange of courtesies the two dignitaries had in-depth discussions on Peace, Security and Development in the Great Lakes Region.

Mr. Huang expressed appreciation for the great work undertaken by H.E President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to address the multiple peace, security and development challenges in the region.

The Special Envoy informed that the United Nations has come up with a revitalized strategy and plan of action towards peace, security and development of the region and called on all the member states to give support to the process.

Mr. Xia commended Uganda’s progressive refugee policy which is greatly appreciated and acknowledged by the UN and the international community as a whole.

In response the Minister welcomed the UN’s new strategy and plan of action for the Great Lakes Region and reassured Mr. Huang that Uganda will play its role and give support to the UN initiative towards achieving regional peace, security and development. He accepted the UN’s invitation to participate at the next session of the UN Security Council to share his views on the region.

The meeting was also attended by Ms. Susan Ngongi Namondo the UN Resident Coordinator and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
