Key Suspect in Wobulenzi Attack Arrested, Two Guns Recovered

A suspect who disguised himself as a mentally ill person and attacked security guards in Luwero District has been arrested.

The Police also recovered two guns that had been stolen during the same attack that took place on December 7, when the man attacked Advance Smart Micro Finance in Modern Zone, Wobulenzi town.

The attacker shot and killed a 20-year-old guard later identified as Leone Odongo, who had been deployed by SGA Security Company and made off with his SAR rifle. Odongo was the fifth security person to be killed and to lose a gun under similar circumstances in Luwero district.

The Acting Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson Patrick Lule says that Policemen were able to identify the suspect through CCTV footage from a previous robbery at a Petrol station in Lukomera trading centre, Katikamu sub-county where he also stole a gun.

Lule says that the suspect whose identity is withheld by Police was arrested after a tip-off by residents who spotted him while sleeping in a temporary tent erected in a sand quarry on Sunday evening. Upon his arrest, the suspect helped the policemen to dig up the two SAR rifles which he had wrapped in polythene bags and hidden in the sand.

Lule says that by the time he was picked up, he was planning to use the guns to launch attacks against mobile money agents and petrol stations ahead of the festive season. He has now been transferred to Luwero Central Police Station as police hunt for his accomplices.

However Richard Bwabye, the Resident District Commissioner says that the four other guns stolen from Policemen at Busiika Police Station and Kiwumpa checkpoints are still missing.

In July, four men armed with machetes overran a police checkpoint at Kiwumpa village along the Kampala-Gulu highway and hacked Police Constables Josephat Twinamatsiko as well as his colleague Ronald Busingye before they made off with two guns. Busingye died on the way to Luwero hospital.

On October 31, the assailants who were about seven armed with a pistol and guns attacked Busiika Police Station. They shot Detective Inspector of Police, Alex Wagaluka, the in-charge CID, and Police constable Moses Ongol to death.

Another Policeman died in Mulago hospital days later as a result of wounds sustained in the attack. The assailants made off with two guns. Police have recovered only two out of the six rifles, stolen from security guards in Luwero District.
