KCCA Councillors Arrested

On Thursday, police in Kampala arrested a total of fourteen Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) councillors, including the Speaker Zahara Luyirika, her Deputy Nasur Masaba.

The others who were arrested are; Faisal Kibirige, Gadhafi Nasur and Mushin Kakande.  Others are Winnie Nansubuga, Faisal Ssebayiga, Mosh Ssendi Afrikan, Paul Kato, Richard Sembatya, Rose Kigozi Nalubwama, Moses Kataabu, Fausta Bitaano, and the personal assistant to the speaker Aksam Ssemakula.

The councillors were arrested after they hit the streets to protest against the arrest of street vendors and hawkers. The councillors started the protest from City Hall donning white t-shirts bearing the words, “Omutembeyi Ssimuyekera” which literally means “a hawker isn’t a terrorist”

The councillors were arrested along Wilson road and detained at Wilson road police before being transferred to Central Police Station (CPS)

Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Oweyesigyire confirmed the arrests but said the councillors had not been charged.
