Four Arrested After Missing Child is Found Dead

Police in Kibaale are holding four suspects in connection with the death of a minor. The suspects are Sylvester Muwonge, Julius Kabagambe, Everlyne Musimenta, and Maria Gorretty Komugenyi, all residents of Kainama village in Nyamarwa sub-county.

It is reported that the child went missing from his parent’s home at around 5 pm on Friday last week. His father, Silvano Byaruhanga explains that they left the child playing with his other siblings at home as they went to the garden. However, says that the one-year and 8-month-old child was nowhere to be seen when they returned.

According to Byaruhanga, one of their children who was attending to the minor informed them that Julius Kabagambe had picked up the deceased. They immediately alerted their neighbors and area leaders who joined them in the search for the child before they reported the matter to the police.

He explains that they searched for the child in vain until Sunday evening when they recovered his lifeless body in a maize plantation belonging to Kabagambe. Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region police spokesperson, says that Kabagambe who is believed to be the prime suspect varnished from the village ever since the child went missing and was arrested on Sunday night while hiding in a bush in the neighboring village.

He says Kabagambe led them to three other suspects who have since been arrested to help police with investigations. According to Hakiza, the suspects who are currently detained at Kibaale central police station are cooperating with the police, adding that they will be charged with murder once police investigations are through.

According to Hakiza, the minor’s body was found with bruises on the neck, an indication that the child could have been strangled to death before the body was dumped in the maize plantation.
