Assailants kill policeman guarding High Court Judge in Soroti

The Police in Soroti are investigating circumstances under which unknown assailants killed a policeman who was guarding the home of a High Court Judge in Soroti.

According to eyewitnesses, the policeman was on his way to the Judge’s home around 7:30 pm last evening when he was shot dead by the assailants who took off with his gun.

The Judiciary on Wednesday morning confirmed the incident that happened near the residence of Justice Ajiji Alex Mackay on Tuesday evening.

“We have learnt of an unfortunate incident where an unidentified assailant attacked a police Guard at the Judge’s residence in Soroti, grabbed his gun and shot him dead. The thug then whisked away with the gun,” Said the Judiciary Spokesperson, Jameson Karemani in a statement.

However, Justice Ajiji was away in Nebbi district at the time of the incident.

The East Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Oscar Ageca identified the deceased as Sgt. Gideon Emuria and said a serious manhunt has been launched to get the culprits.

“We have reviewed the facts surrounding the incident and a serious manhunt for the suspects has already begun based on available leads. At this moment, the IGP and the entire police fraternity, mourn the loss of Sgt. Emuria, who had dedicated his life to serving the Public. Our thoughts and prayers go to his immediate family, friends, and relationship,” Ageca said.

“Guard duties are one of the cardinal functions of the police, and there is absolutely no reason for such senseless acts of violence against officers. Although the motive of the assailants is not yet determined, we believe this was a targeted murder.” Ageca added.
