Amama Mbabazi Dragged to Court Over Failure to Pay Rent

Former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi is in a spot of bother. Mbabazi has been dragged to court by former minister Yona Kanyomozi over failure to pay rent totalling to Shs26million for his office along Nakasero road in Kampala.

Mbabazi is said to have occupied Kanyomozi’s office space at Plot 29 Nakasero in 2015 after entering an unwritten tenancy agreement in 2015. Kanyomozi says he agreed with Mbabazi that the latter would be paying $5000. Mbabazi paid six months in advance. However, Mbabazi did not pay any more money for four months after the expiry of the six months.

Mbabazi is said to have started defaulting after that and paying in small instalments despite efforts to have him pay in full.

By October 2021 paid only $39992(approximately shs143.7million), leaving an outstanding balance of $7507(approximately shs26 million).

“To date, the defendant remains in default of rent worth $7507 and all efforts by the plaintiff to have the issue solved have proved futile as the defendant has purposefully denied him an audience,” court documents say.

Kanyomozi says Mbabazi was dodgy about signing a formal agreement.

Kanyomozi wants Mbabazi to pay $7507(approximately shs26 million) in rent arrears, and $20,000 as general damages plus interest from the date of defaulting on payment until when he pays.
