Bishop Wandera Laid to Rest Inside Immaculate Conception

Bishop Emeritus, Erasmus Desiderius Wandera, the pioneer Bishiop of Soroti Catholic Diocese has been laid to rest. 

The 92- year- old cleric was laid to rest inside the Immaculate Conception Church building around 2:00 pm on Tuesday afternoon following a mass attended by thousands of Christians within and outside Teso at Fr.  Hilders Primary School ground.

Rev. Fr. Gonzaga Waziwazi Ongereny, the Chancellor of Soroti Catholic Diocese, said they decided to bury their founder Bishop inside the church in line with the tradition of the Catholic church.

While delivering his homily, the Archbishop of Tororo Archdiocese, His Grace, Dr. Emmanuel Obbo, said that Bishop Wandera lived a life that influenced the lives of many people in Teso amidst difficult times in the region. He commended the efforts of the late Bishop in serving the people of Teso during turbulent times.

The Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, Luigi Bianco, said that Bishop Wandera’s outstanding service in Teso enabled Soroti to host Pope John Paul 11 in 1993.

“I join to mourn the passing of Bishop Wandera. The Church is grateful to God and to him for his generous pastoral ministry in the vineyard of the Lord as a priest in his Diocese of Tororo and as the first Bishop of Soroti”, read the message read by the Apostolic Nuncio on behalf of Pope Francis. 

Jessica Alupo, the Vice President said that Bishop Wandera was very courageous and frank to leaders, and very keen in the observance of Christian Sacraments.

Wandera was consecrated Bishop of Soroti Catholic Diocese in 1981 and retired in 2007. During his reign, he ordained 45 diocesan priests and established five parishes of Katine, Acumet, Ocero Katakwi, and Magoro.

Bishop Wandera worked in various capacities as Vice Chairperson of the Uganda Episcopal Conference (1986-1994), and Uganda Martyrs University Government Council among other institutions. 

Through him, Soroti Catholic Diocese started the Integrated Development Organization (SOCADIDO), Eneku Village, (Kyoga Veritas 91.5 FM and Delta Radio 97.0 FM under Bishop Wandera Development Information Centre- WADIC, which remain instrumental in the development of Teso sub-region.
