150 Nakanyonyi SS Students Rushed to Hospital Over Suspected Poisoning

About 150 students of Nakanyonyi Secondary School in Nagalama, Mukono District have been rushed to hospital over alleged food poisoning.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, the students were rushed to hospitals in the area that include Nagalama Hospital, Mukono CoU Hospital, Mukono General Hospital, Kayunga Hospital, and Kawolo Hospital after they complained about severe stomach pains.

According to URN’s reporter at the scene in Mukono, the students developed complications after being served lunch comprising beans and posho.

“Two wards in Grade B at Mukono Hospital are full and they have admitted some of the victims in the private wing. Ambulances are still ferrying in more learners,” said the reporter.

Owoyesigyire said investigations are already going on to find out how the suspected poison ended up in the learner’s meals.

He added that samples have been picked from the victims and taken to the Government Analytical Laboratory in Kampala for examination to ascertain the exact cause of the problem as investigations continue.

According to some sources, Nakanyonyi Secondary School has been at the centre of a dispute between the neighboring community and the Church of Uganda over land.

Others revealed that today’s incident comes a day after the senior chef was sacked off his duties for unclear reasons.

At the time of compiling this story, the school has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
