One Arrested Over Banking Agent Robbery in Mukono

Police are holding a man in connection to a robbery at Wantoni trading center in Mukono Municipality on Tuesday night. The suspect is David Jjuuko. He was picked up after three armed men riding on motorcycle registration number UFR 296W trailed a sales team from Uganda breweries limited that had gone to a banking agent to bank money, stabbed the team leader, and took off with an unspecified amount of money at around 10: 30pm.

Gerald Okedi, the sales team leader, says they had spent a long day in Galiraya in Kayunga district selling different beer and had returned with about Shillings 30 million for banking. “As I was taking the money to the mobile money agent, a man jumped off a Boda boda and grabbed the money bag. I tried to resist but he stabbed me with a knife in addition to shooting in the air to scare away people. They jumped on their bodaboda and took off,” Okedi told URN at Sir. Albert Medical Clinic where he is recieving treatment.

The agent banking attendant declined to speak to URN about the matter. However, Okedi said that the banking agent had closed the center and only opened it to attend to them since they are her clients. Robert Mbabazi, an eyewitness, says that the robbery happened within not more than two minutes.

“The victims made an alarm, but residents could not risk responding to a scene where bullet sound was coming from,” he said. Mukono Division Police Commander, Edrisa Kyeyune, says that the police are yet to come up with an official statement on the incident. He however confirmed the arrest of David Jjuuko, saying that he is linked to the entire incident but didn’t divulge details.

URN has learned from the scene of crime officers that six bullet shells were recovered while mapping and profiling the scene. Similar incidents happened last year where unknown assailants attacked several shops and supermarkets.
