Mbarara Central Market Facilities Worth UGX10 Million Vandalized

Unknown people have vandalized facilities at the newly built Mbarara Central Market valued at over Shillings 10 million. This was revealed in the market executive committee report presented to the Mbarara City South Division Council Mayor, Jomo Mugabe on Monday. It comes about six months after Mbarara City Council relocated 1095 vendors to the central market in June last year.

However, level 4 Kiosks have remained empty to date. The Mbarara City South Division Council Mayor, Jomo Mugabe, says that the vandals have destroyed and stolen some of the facilitates that include Yaka meters, switches, doors, and their frames on level 4.

Fedson Mugisha, Kyapotani, and Kakoba Central Cells LC III Councilor and Finance Committee chairperson blames the vandalism on the disorganization of the Central market leaders and the City Leadership. He explains that the city council has failed to provide proper security and leadership for the market.

Emmanuel Muhumuza, the Chairperson Mbarara Central Market Vendors Association says the council has failed to deploy a person to monitor the CCTV cameras that would be helping in fighting vandalism. He says they have to pay someone to retrieve footage for them when the property is lost in the market.

He says that the City Council authorities terminated the contract of the security group that the vendors had employed but failed to replace them for three months until December, which exposed their business danger. Richard Mugisha, the Mbarara Deputy City Clerk says that the market is still under the defect’s liability and all the vandalized facilities will be replaced by the contractor.

He says that the council deployed a professional security company starting December 1st, 2022 to protect the market.
